OTTAVA (J&J MedTech) vs Osso VR
OTTAVA is a capital purchase for a hospital robotic surgery program. FDA granted it De Novo authorization in July 2026 (DEN250068) for ten general surgery procedures, among them cholecystectomy and gastric sleeve, and J&J is starting with select US customers. A program willing to be an early site gets a table-integrated soft-tissue robot.
Osso VR sells to a health system's nurse education team. Its Nursing Series runs individual and collaborative procedural scenarios on off-the-shelf headsets, with prebriefs, debriefs and dashboards in Osso Loop. Price is on request and headsets cost extra. Its randomized trials score simulated and sawbones tasks, and TechCrunch reported Osso financed the UCLA trial of 20 participants.
The two never meet in one purchase decision. One is operating-room capital, the other is headset training software for health systems. For a nurse educator with a training budget, OTTAVA loses: it is a robot sale, and J&J describes Polyphonic as support for OTTAVA surgical teams.
