OTTAVA (J&J MedTech) vs VirtaMed
J&J MedTech and VirtaMed sell into different rooms of the hospital. A surgical department buys OTTAVA to operate with, authorized under FDA De Novo in July 2026 and launching with select U.S. customers. A residency program or simulation center buys VirtaMed's ArthroS, LaparoS, GynoS, UroS and RoboS stations, distributed by CAE Healthcare, and VirtaMed says its simulators use original instruments. Both are capital purchases and neither publishes a price. VirtaMed's papers include a 14-resident randomized trial in which ArthroS Hip VR performed about the same as an immersive VR rival, and a crossover study in which trainees improved on LaparoS, LapSim and LapMentor III. OTTAVA's authorization rested on an FDA IDE study that began in late 2024, according to MedTech Dive, and no peer-reviewed OTTAVA outcome paper has been found. A hospital capital committee that wants published results before it signs has three training papers to read on VirtaMed and none found for OTTAVA.
