Connected Papers vs Perplexity Pro
Perplexity does not market Pro as a clinical tool. It is a general answer engine priced at $17 per month billed annually ($204 a year), with a free tier, Deep research and a demo showing premium data from PitchBook, Statista and Crunchbase. An analyst on a pharma team scanning companies and markets gets more from that than from a paper map.
A PhD student assembling a literature review is the harder case. Connected Papers builds a graph around one origin paper from the Semantic Scholar corpus, free at five graphs a month or EUR 4.23 per month billed as EUR 50.81 annually on Academic. Perplexity's pages name no clinical sources, so for a reference list built from biomedical papers Pro fits that student less well than the graph. In a 2026 JMIR test of nine free tools on 15 retracted articles, the free version of Perplexity put a retracted article in topic overviews in 6 cases, though that test did not cover Pro.
