MedAI Verdict, SimConverse record, https://medaiverdict.com/tools/simconverse, version November 2, 2026

Bottom line

Health professions students talk to AI virtual patients on SimConverse and then receive marking and feedback against rubrics that educators write in plain language. Dymaxion Technologies Pty Ltd, headquartered in Sydney, sells it to programs, and the site offers a demo booking, a contact address and a login. The vendor's own evidence is mostly optometry, nursing, pharmacy and surgery programs with one medical school study, and the published studies are in optometry and nursing. Clinicians looking for a point-of-care tool or an EHR-connected product are not the buyer, since the platform is aimed at learners and educators.

What does the platform do?

The vendor organizes it into five areas: Engage, Control, Deploy, Measure and Integrate. Learners talk to photorealistic avatars and complete preparation, investigation and documentation tasks such as SOAP notes, ISBAR handovers and referral letters. Feedback covers content, wording, tonality and pacing. Authoring tools set characters, voices, behavior and investigation media, and the vendor advertises "1,000s of certified rubrics." Cohorts arrive through SSO or LTI 1.3 with Moodle, Canvas and Blackboard named, and analytics include rubric heatmaps and exports "ready for IRB, QI, publication or dissertation."

The privacy policy states the models are "proprietary, single-purpose AI models that we develop and host," with no third-party large language models or external AI APIs in the student or educator experience.

What do the studies say?

An optometry study from Aston University (PMID 40975895) had 16 final-year students converse in randomized order with SimConverse, ChatGPT and a human actor. It found no significant difference between the actor and SimConverse, and ChatGPT was rated significantly poorer (p<0.001). The sample is small, the outcomes were self-rated, and the academic authors are independent of the vendor.

A Villanova study (PMID 41378502) gave first-year BSN students therapeutic communication scenarios. Its primary result was null: the experimental group showed "nonstatistically significant higher therapeutic communication skill," alongside positive qualitative themes. A 2026 paper in Advances in Simulation (PMID 42839253), by Villanova and PCOM authors, compared AI and human raters on the Weight Sensitivity Instrument. Seven of 11 items showed good agreement (Gwet's AC1 of 0.71 or higher), and three items stayed poor at 0.42, 0.66 and 0.64.

The vendor's research page also cites studies from Nottingham pharmacy, Aston Medical School, Auckland surgery and Villanova nurse practitioner training, labeled peer-reviewed or RCT. Journal publication is not confirmed. The "12,000+ learners" figure is the vendor's, from a multi-site study on that page.

What does it cost?

No price is public. Vendor copy says "Unlimited usage at unlimited scale," and no figure, currency, trial or refund is published.

Who runs SimConverse?

Dymaxion trades as SimConverse, with offices in Sydney, Austin and London and a sustainability page calling it a fully distributed company. Folklore Ventures says it led the seed round, in a post dated March 9, 2023, and names Aiden Roberts and Will Pamment as co-founders. The homepage speaks of "five years of proven results," and its logo strip shows Aston, King's College London, Villanova and Sydney among the universities, plus NHS England, NHS Lothian and the Queensland Government.

What does it say about security?

The vendor states SOC 2 Type II certification, ISO 27001 certified data storage, GDPR and FERPA compliance, with HIPAA, UK GDPR and Privacy Act added on its research page. Its privacy policy says data sits in an AWS data center in the institution's home country. It claims 99.9% uptime and runs a public status page. A BAA is not stated, and no certificate or trust-center link is given.

The verdict

Educators teaching communication skills in optometry or nursing have published studies behind the product. The Aston study found no significant difference between SimConverse and a human actor in 16 students on self-rated outcomes, and the Villanova nursing study found no significant gain in the experimental group. A medical school or a clinician at the point of care would be buying on the vendor's own account.

What the literature says

4 peer-reviewed studies indexed on PubMed evaluate SimConverse in clinical contexts. The most relevant are shown below, ranked by editorial relevance score combining title match, study design, recency, and journal tier.

Artificial intelligence-driven patient history and symptoms combined with slit-lamp eye simulation for enhancing the clinical training of students. (opens in new tab)
Ting PW, Wolffsohn JS· Clin Exp Optom· 2026
Communication between eye care practitioners is essential to optimise health care. Traditionally, actors have been used prior to real patient exposure, but this is expensive and much training is needed to ensure a consistent student experience and assessment. Artificial intelligence using ChatBots is shown to provide a high-quality student experience, and due to their portability and cost, it has the potential to revolutionise communication training. Augmented reality ocular examination simulations have been shown to be effective in teaching ophthalmology and optometry. With large language mo…
The Effect of Generative Artificial Intelligence Simulation on First-Year Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Therapeutic Communication Skill. (opens in new tab)
Ross JG, Furman GE, Latz E, et al.· Comput Inform Nurs· 2026
Therapeutic communication is an essential nursing skill to foster nurse-patient relationships. Prelicensure nursing students experience anxiety when communicating with patients, which can impact performance. Generative artificial intelligence is a new method of simulation that offers an opportunity for nursing students to practice therapeutic communication in a safe environment. The purposes of this study were to explore: (1) the effect of generative artificial intelligence simulation on first-year baccalaureate nursing students' therapeutic communication skill; and (2) first-year baccalaurea…
Advances in evaluating and delivering nontechnical skills training: The use of simulation, robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. (opens in new tab)
Baskaran R, Singh A, Somani BK· Curr Opin Urol· 2026
Nontechnical skills (NTS), such as communication, leadership, and situational awareness, are essential for ensuring surgical safety. However, they are often prioritized less than technical skills. This narrative review summarizes recent technological progress in teaching and evaluating NTS in urology, emphasising the use of simulation, robotic-specific frameworks, and artificial intelligence. Validated assessment tools such as NoTSUS and ICARS have been developed to provide objective measures of NTS, particularly to address communication difficulties in the robotic console setting. Recent res…
How does AI-generated assessment compare to expert assessment in simulation-based experiences: Analyzing AI-human interrater reliability. (opens in new tab)
Brace M, Furman G, Diewald L, et al.· Adv Simul (Lond)· 2026
In the health professions, artificial intelligence simulation-based experiences (AI-SBEs) are increasingly used to evaluate learner performance and provide feedback. Benefits of AI-SBEs include providing instantaneous feedback, allowing more practice opportunities than feasible using traditional methods, and reducing educator burden. However, methods for calibrating AI feedback are underdeveloped. This study evaluated the feedback provided by a generative AI-based software program (SimConverse) when assessing simulated patient interactions using the Weight Sensitivity Instrument (WSI), a chec…
