Epic Sepsis Model vs Etiometry Platform

These two share no buyer. The Epic sepsis score is an adult inpatient and ED alert, taken by the quality and informatics leaders of an Epic hospital as part of its license. Etiometry goes to an ICU team, most plausibly a pediatric cardiac ICU, because its listed indices cover oxygen delivery, ventilation, lactate and acidosis in post-surgical and ventilated patients.

Epic's score has outside validations. A 2021 JAMA Internal Medicine study of 38,455 hospitalizations at Michigan Medicine found an AUROC of 0.63, with 67% of sepsis cases missed and alerts on 18% of hospitalizations. A 2026 prospective study of the updated version across four US systems reported AUROC of 0.82 to 0.92 and positive predictive value of 0.13 to 0.26. Trade sources say the score is not FDA cleared, and Epic's cleared Deterioration Index Version 2 is a different model.

Etiometry has four FDA-cleared risk indices, three of them limited to patients up to 12 years old. Its openFDA record lists 11 clearances, a count that includes a Cardiogenic Shock Tool outside the four. The vendor's length-of-stay claim, down by up to 36%, is an observational figure.
