Avo vs DermaSensor
A primary care clinic buys DermaSensor and a health system's informatics office buys Avo, and no buyer weighs the two. DermaSensor holds an FDA De Novo grant (DEN230008, January 2024) for a handheld spectroscopy reader that gives a primary care physician a "Monitor" or "Investigate Further" score on a lesion already judged suspicious. The device rents monthly under a one-year agreement with a try-and-return option, and training is included. The vendor's FAQ says EHR integration is not available yet and that no dedicated CPT code exists. Its own figures show 96% sensitivity for "Monitor" in the DERM-SUCCESS multi-reader, multi-case study, specificity of 33% in DERM-ASSESS III, and 9.4% at the lowest cut point in the UPMC study. Avo lists EHR copilots for admission, rounding and discharge, which a clinic shopping for a lesion reader would not price.
