What is JotPsych and who sells it?

The seller is SmartScribe Corp, founded in 2023 by Nathan Peereboom (CEO) and Jackson Bierfeldt (CTO), according to Crunchbase and Technical.ly. TechFundingNews reports a $5M seed round led by Base10 Partners in July 2025, after about $300,000 in friends-and-family money in 2024. The company puts its total at $5M to $5.5M. No acquisition or ownership change is listed.

Headquarters is unresolved. Technical.ly says Washington, DC. PitchBook lists Pepper Pike, Ohio. Tracxn and Crunchbase list Cleveland.

The current homepage headline is "Your whole behavioral health practice. One system." It says JotPsych "Works with any EHR. Or replaces it entirely." Vendor pages list med-management templates and Idaho TMS as a customer. No TMS-specific template is listed.

What does JotPsych do well?

The scribe is built around behavioral-health work, and the product pages document the features.

Notes can be recorded on a phone, tablet or desktop, in person or by telehealth, and come back as a structured note "in under 60 seconds" (vendor wording). Sixteen languages are supported. You can edit with plain instructions such as "Make the assessment more concise", and the tool learns from edits.

The vendor lists 60+ pre-built behavioral-health templates, including psychiatric intake, follow-up, therapy, group, EMDR and ABA, and a builder that works from an uploaded sample note. A custom document generator draws on session data.

For billing support, the tool suggests CPT and ICD codes, aligns with payer contracts and flags audit risk. The add-on JotAudit checks that "each signed note supports the code billed".

JotRx handles e-prescribing including EPCS, JotMeet handles telehealth, JotBill handles billing and revenue-cycle work, and scheduling, patient messaging and lab orders are listed.

The security page states that Business Associate Agreements "are standard, not a paid add-on". It also lists AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS in transit, optional PII redaction, audio deleted after transcription, and a promise to never train models on clinical data. Infrastructure is described as ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 aligned and hosted in US-East.

The vendor describes the product as working beside an existing EHR or replacing it, which gives a practice two ways in: keep the current record and use JotPsych for notes, or move scheduling, prescribing and billing over later.

The platform spread is the differentiator. A psychiatrist who writes a med-management note, sends the prescription and bills from one place avoids copy-paste steps that single-purpose scribes leave.

Where does it fall short?

No peer-reviewed study is listed, and a physician-tools directory notes the same. The "10,000+ practices", "3.1M+ notes written" and "45M+ audit-rule checks" on the homepage have no methodology shown.

On r/Psychiatry in March 2024, a commenter wrote: "JotPsych keeps the notes organized by name & date & doesn't limit the # of notes held...but it's way too wordy." A competitor's psychiatry comparison says JotPsych builds bullet-style notes instead. The two accounts disagree, and the Reddit comment is over two years old, so templates may have changed. Neither is verified.

A competitor's comparison says the audit and billing claims lack published independent validation.

The security page says "SOC 2 Certified Vendors" and describes its subprocessors as independently SOC 2 Type II certified. A SOC 2 report for JotPsych itself is not stated, so JotPsych cannot be described as SOC 2 certified. The site shows a "HIPAA Compliant" badge. HITRUST and FDA status are not stated. JotPsych is documentation software.

The site says "Works with any EHR", "no migration, up in 5 minutes", and has a "Switch EHRs" page. It names no specific EHR integration. A competitor EHR review describes notes as pushed or pasted into the EHR. Whether any write-back exists is not documented.

What does JotPsych cost?

The Basic plan is $135 per clinician per month, or $1,620 per year billed annually, as of October 2026, with unlimited notes and templates. A Moonlighting plan and an Everything plan sit below and above it, and add-ons are priced per clinician. The monthly price and the trial length are not stated on the page.

How does JotPsych compare?

A Reddit thread compares it with Nabla, and vendor testimonials on the site compare it with Freed. Lists from Skriber, Pimsy and Commure place it among psychiatry scribes alongside Mentalyc-type tools. All three of those sources sell competing products.

Lyssn, a provider-side mental-health tool, does a different job: it scores session quality for organizations rather than writing notes.

JotPsych's edge over a scribe-only tool is the all-in-one practice platform. Its disadvantage is the same thing: a practice that already likes its EHR may not want a second system with unspecified connections.

What does the evidence say?

There is no peer-reviewed study, only one community comment from 2024 that is mixed in tone, and vendor statistics without methods. The vendor testimonials ("Better quality note, better interface, better service" from a solo psychiatrist, and "The amount of data it adds to notes is crazy" from a medical director) are marketing and show only that satisfied customers exist.

Who is JotPsych for?

A solo psychiatrist who wants templates that match med-management and therapy visits and is ready to pay $135 a month. A group practice of seven or more clinicians, since the vendor lists custom pricing and 10% off any plan at that size. A practice looking to replace both scribe and EHR in one move.

It is not for a clinician who needs a verified EHR connector, who wants evidence that notes are accurate before using them, or who needs a SOC 2 report from JotPsych itself.

The verdict

JotPsych is a feature-rich behavioral-health platform that has not been independently tested. Run it on real follow-up visits and read ten of the generated notes closely for length. Ask for its own SOC 2 report and the list of EHRs it writes back to before moving a practice.
