What does TORTUS do?

TORTUS describes its flow as four steps. Listen captures speaker-separated audio, encrypted locally. Write produces structured notes, letters and referrals. Code suggests clinical codes alongside the note. File sends the result into the EHR with clinician approval. The homepage line is "Notes that write themselves." The company says patient audio retained at rest is "Zero, by design."

A layer called Shell checks every statement against the consultation. TORTUS reports "Detected hallucinations removed 92.7%" as a live platform metric. The homepage also cites an npj Digital Medicine paper reporting a 75% reduction in major hallucinations.

Deployments named by TORTUS are the London Ambulance Service telephone clinical hub, St George's emergency department and Royal Devon, which it calls the first trust to fully integrate TORTUS with Epic. In September 2025 it described "the NHS's first Epic and Cerner ambient integrations." Telephony integration with X-on Health reaches 3,500 GP surgeries (March 2025).

What are the regulatory claims?

TORTUS says it was the first ambient voice technology registered with the MHRA as a Class I device in November 2024 and upgraded to UKCA Class IIa in June 2026. It was admitted to the MHRA AI Airlock Phase II in December 2025. It claims ISO 13485 and NHS DTAC compliance and says it is built to NHS England's ambient voice technology standard. Its Trust Centre publishes policies, sub-processors and penetration test results.

What does the evidence say?

The NHS England Phase IV evaluation, published through Great Ormond Street in July 2025, covered nine clinical sites and more than 17,000 patients. It was co-run with TORTUS, so it is not fully independent of the vendor.

St George's reported that emergency clinicians "halved documentation time" and saw 13.4% more patients per shift, and the hospital's news page links the figures. Testimonials on TORTUS's site include "I would quit my job if you took TORTUS away" and "It reduced probably my admin by 80%."

Who is behind it?

TORTUS AI was founded in November 2022 at Entrepreneur First. Dr Dom Pimenta is CEO, and the office is in Holborn, London. The About page reports a $4.4M seed round led by Khosla Ventures in March 2023.

What are the published prices?

There is no public price. The one public figure is an expired UK G-Cloud 14 listing valid to 31 March 2025: GBP 30,000 excluding VAT for a three-month pilot with unlimited licences, or GBP 15,000 for a three-month pilot with up to 100 licences. A Commure roundup puts enterprise scribes generally at $400 to $700+ per provider per month.

The verdict

An NHS trust or UK GP practice that wants an ambient scribe already linked to Epic, Cerner or the X-on telephony network is the buyer TORTUS is built for. A US practice should look at scribes with HIPAA and SOC 2 documentation, since the credentials TORTUS lists are MHRA, UKCA, ISO 13485 and NHS DTAC.
